REXBURG—The BYU-Idaho Theatre Department will perform “The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical” over the next two weeks. It is the first production of the spring semester season.

“It's literally a fun rock-based musical that tells the story of Percy Jackson,” said Kathie Schmid, the director of the show.

The production is adapted from the book “Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief” by Rick Riordan. The Lightning Thief originally began as a one act off Broadway play; the play grew and evolved into a full production and eventually moved onto Broadway. It’s now available in regional theatres.

Schmid says theatre students and faculty have expressed a lot of interest in the production.

“A lot of you current students, this is the book you all grew up on in the middle grades,” Schmid said. “And so everyone was excited about it.”

The show has students working on it in every area of production from the actors to the costume designers and students helping with the set and lights.

Student Drake Hedrick is working as the assistant director.

”It's such an honor to be on this kind of show,” said Drake Hedrick, a student who is the assistant director. “You just learn so much through the experience, and being able to watch with a mentor, be an assistant to someone, I've learned so much from Sister Schmid, and I feel so honored to be part of this project.”

“The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical” will be performed in the Snow Drama Theatre from June 9 until June 20. Tickets can be purchased at the BYU-Idaho Ticket Office website here.
