With the holiday season nearly here, the BYU-Idaho campus is brightening up with the Christmas spirit.

Grounds maintenance crews are up in the trees stringing Christmas lights to bring the holiday to campus.

Grounds worker Nicole Morales has spent most of her morning harnessed eight feet up in the air.

“We're doing a structured and it's, kind of, just weave around and then the branches have all these little nodes on them, so if you're lucky and if it's tall enough, you can just weave it around instead of going over a bigger branch,” Morales said. “But there's other ways, one has a candy cane, and it's just like wrap it around.”

For Morales, climbing up and down the trees isn’t difficult.

“Probably if it was your first time, yes, but it's pretty easy once you get it.” Morales said. “We did have a co-worker, and he was afraid of heights, but he kind of quit a couple weeks later.”

Students have been watching the workers light the trees and they’re thrilled to have the campus lit up.

“I've not been here long, but I think that I really like the spirit it brings. I like the atmosphere that it provides. I just love Christmas generally. So, I love it anytime that we get the lights out and get a little bit festive. It's just a good time.”

“I’ve never been here for Christmas, so I've been sitting here watching them set it all up, and it looks so fun. They pulled all of the plants out and replaced them with Christmas trees. I feel like it makes it a little more homey around here. So I'm excited. I'm excited for Christmas in Rexburg.”

The official tree lighting is Thursday, Nov. 21 at 6 p.m. in the Taylor Quad. There will be free hot cocoa and cinnamon rolls along with horse-drawn carriage rides.
