Questions about gospel teachings and the history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are inevitable for members of the Church and those who are learning about the Church. These questions may even become doubts. In today’s BYU-Idaho devotional, Elder Clement M. Matswagothata, a General Authority Seventy of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, taught BYU-Idaho students what to do when encountering these situations.

When something as complex and vast as the gospel questions will always arise, but questions are not bad.

“A faithful disciple is not one who has no questions,” Elder Matswagothata said. “A faithful disciple is one who trusts Jesus Christ and build their foundation on Him while they seek answers from divinely appointed sources of truth.”

Elder Matswagothata taught that when someone develops questions it is important that they are led by the Holy Ghost to find out answers, and to not allow questions to shake their faith.

“Boats that are anchored do not drift,” Elder Matswagothata said. “That is why we anchor testimonies to Jesus Christ. He is the Rock upon which we build. If you know Him—even in a simple way—you are on solid ground, and you can keep building.”

In staying anchored to Christ, Elder Matswagothata said a person cannot be shaken when they may encounter hard questions and doubts come up.

“The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is here as a result of one who had a question, and I'm sure many other questions, and that's Joseph Smith,” Elder Matswagothata said in an interview with BYU-Idaho Radio. “And those questions were answered not all at once. Here a little, there a little. And that is really where all of us are.”

Elder Matswagothata invited listeners to remember what the Spirit has taught them and to stay anchored to the Savior.
