BYU-Idaho dancers are moving beyond words in this semesters Extravadance performance called “Beyond Words.”
The dance concert is student directed, choreographed and performed. It features a variety of dances like jazz, ballet, hip hop and contemporary. The choreography explores how movement can be used as a means of communication.
Ashley Storm, the chair of the Dance Department, is impressed by the students’ interpretations of the theme.
“Some really took kind of a past experience and shared it, whether that's like an emotional one or a playful approach,” Storm said. “Some of them took themes just of fun and play, some took themes of relationship and some took themes of really trying to uplift or feel the spirit or the gospel through movement. So, they all kind of approached it in a different way, which again created a lot of variety for the audience.”
The performances are Tuesday through Saturday at 7:30 p.m. In the Snow Drama Theatre on campus.
“It really is a great show where there really is something for everyone,” Storm said. “Some concerts are dedicated to ballet, which is lovely, and some are dedicated to ballroom dance, but I think with the mixture of the genres, I think everyone will walk away really enjoying something from it and I think they'll just feel uplifted and excited about what they just saw.”
Dance student Victoria Mercado is excited to experience the dances with an audience.
“What I'm most excited for about Extravadance is just seeing all the dances come together after all the hard work we've put in throughout the semester,” Mercado said. “We have some great faculty leaders that are in charge of our show and also some great student directors and it's been a blast to work with them all. Something else I'm really excited for is just seeing the audience's reaction and the love they kind of reciprocate to us after we perform. We love what we do and it's really awesome to see the audience members show that they love what we're doing also.”
