Parents in the Rexburg community are invited to learn more about the role of attachment in parent-child relationships and how to strengthen them in a seminar provided by the Child Development Program Administration class at BYU-Idaho.

The free seminar will be given by Daman Reynolds, a local licensed marriage and family therapist, who specializes in parent-child attachment in his professional practice.

Program Administration professor Betty McQuain believes the topic is important for families to understand.

“The child feels like they can trust the adults to take care of them, to love them, and to meet their needs,” McQuain said. “And if children don't feel like they're safe with the adults and that they can't count on the adults, then it causes problems in development.”

The seminar starts at 6 p.m. on Thursday and will be in the John L. Clarke Building in rooms 235 and 239. An RSVP is required for the limited childcare available and parents are encouraged to bring their children ages 0 to 12.

“He is going to do a presentation and then they're also going to bring the children in for the last part of the workshop and do some activities with the children to build the parent-child bond,” McQuain said.

McQuain hopes the seminar will be helpful to families who can attend.

“It's just so key to healthy development for children is that attachment bond between parents and children,” McQuain said. “And if it doesn't go well, it causes all kinds of problems emotionally, socially, in children's development and in the family dynamic. So it's just very important.”
