Have you ever wanted to learn boxing? The BYU-Idaho campus has a boxing group for beginners and experienced boxers alike!
Ronit Massey has been boxing ever since his aunt introduced him to the sport in 2020. When Massey came to BYU-Idaho he started the school’s first boxing group.
“There was not a boxing club over here and I was kind of disappointed about it, but I think the spirit told me that I can open it,” Massey says.
Massey says the boxing he teaches is different than what most people think of boxing. To him, boxing is not about violence, and he wants to create a peaceful space for boxers to train.
“Boxing is not about hurting someone or beating someone,” Massey says. “It’s more about techniques. It’s an art. In my boxing club I always tell my students this is not an ordinary boxing club. We are representing Christ, and we are representing our college.”
Boxing isn’t just for men. Massey says women also join the boxing group and train together.
“I would highly recommend it for girls,” Massey says. “It’s really good self-defense. It increases the instincts, and I’ve seen a lot of girls there, and they’re doing really great. It also helps in confidence.”
Though boxing may sound intimidating, the boxing group is beginner friendly. Massey teaches newcomers from the beginning and ensures they learn the proper techniques so they can be successful and stay safe. Massey says he teaches a style of boxing that is safe and fun.
“The boxing I’m teaching is Olympics boxing. It’s professional. So, if you see Olympics boxing it’s actually fun to watch and it’s really safe,” Massey says.
The boxing group meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Hart Gym in room 187 and Wednesdays and Fridays in room 204 from 9 p.m. to 10 p.m. Visit I-belong to learn more and register.
