A Drive-by Parade

With all the isolation felt during the pandemic, it’s hard to imagine how our senior citizens feel. Many seniors in Homestead Assisted Living Center and Carriage Cove Short Term Rehabilitation Center in Rexburg have been separated from their loved ones since mid-March due to the national lockdown orders for such facilities.

But tomorrow, May 9, the two centers will host an event designed to help eliminate some of the distance between these residents and their families.

The “Drive-by Parade” invites family, friends and others wanting to show support to drive the planned route in a decorated car, play some music and wave to the residents.

“We want to invite people to come and wish their loved ones a Happy Mother’s Day or…just show their love and support for them,” said Blake Thueson, one of the event organizers.

Those who attend the event should follow some guidelines in order to keep residents safe.

· Do not exit your car at any time.

· Wear a facemask, even though you’ll be in your car.

· Do not throw candy or other items for the residents, to keep any and all germs out of the facility.

Thuesen said they hope this event will help the residents feel loved and connected despite the distance between them and their families.

Blake Jenkins, another one of the parade organizers said residents are excited and looking forward to seeing all the people come out.

So, if you have a few minutes to drive down Main St. tomorrow, it could mean the world to a lonely resident.
