Mathematics Education Introduction

The Mathematics Education program provides a dual focus: a foundation in mathematical theory combined with proven teaching methods.

You’ll learn important teaching skills through:

  • Instructional Methods: Study the science of how humans learn and learn how to meet student needs.
  • Classroom Management: Build a positive learning environment where students feel safe to make mistakes and grow.
  • The Power of Proof: Learn to shift students' mindsets from simple calculation to logical reasoning and questioning assumptions.

You’ll prepare to cover the foundations of the mathematical world:

  • The Foundations of Change: Master Calculus and Linear Algebra to understand rates of change and massive sets of variables.
  • The Logic of the Why: Dive into Analysis and Abstract Algebra to prove mathematical truths from scratch.
  • The Power of Prediction: Use Statistics and Probability to map everything from scientific trends to game theory.

Mathematics Education students choose a minor to become certified to teach in a second area, making you a high-value candidate for school districts. Options include:

  • American Government
  • Biology
  • English
  • History
  • Mathematics
  • Physical Science
  • Spanish
  • TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages)
