When finding a job in the world of construction, a degree is important. But having experience is absolutely crucial. In this occupation, employers will always value more first-hand knowledge over more education since construction projects require precision and timely work. These are some of the skills you should have to best prepare you for a career in Construction.
Communication - Without effective communication, a project can not and will not be completed well or on time. Without communication, a project cannot even begin. Learning this now will help you in your education and in your future career.
Teamwork - In construction, there are so many people involved in a project. Each person is an essential part of the whole. Learning to work well with others will be beneficial to you, and it will be irreplaceable during the completion of a project.
Organization and Scheduling - With so many people involved, resources to acquire, and timeline to schedule, organization is an irreplaceable part of construction. Without it, projects would not be able to be completed.
Hands-on Experience - Not all jobs that can be acquired with a degree in Construction Management requires laborious work. But even if you are pursuing a career that is in the office side of construction, getting hands-on work is extremely beneficial. You will learn the process of building and will better understand the steps it takes to complete a project.
Practical Exposure is Crucial
Experience is the most important thing to gain. Construction requires a keen eye for detail and refined skills, and that can ONLY be found through first-hand experience. When looking for your first job after graduation, your degree will most likely come second to your experience to potential employers.
Start Developing them Now
Now is the best time to start building experience. BYU-Idaho requires Construction Management students to complete two internships before graduation. These will be essential to gain experience for your future career.
Participate in ASC and/or NAHB. ASC and NAHB are competitions where you come together in student-led teams to work together on a hypothetical project. Students take on the real roles of construction management and work together for a solution.
If you are working during or in-between semesters, try to get a job that is relevant to the world of construction. Construction work, office work, or even jobs like building inspectors will look good on your resume and will give you good experience.
