Your job as a civil engineer is the planning, designing, building, repairing, supervising, and managing a variety of construction projects. Sometimes you will work on a project from start to finish, or other times you will help with certain stages of it. Some of these projects you will work on include:

Your Responsibilities

Besides your general responsibilities such as planning, building, and managing construction projects, you also have other specific responsibilities varying from project to project. Some these may include:

• Analyzing different plans, reports, maps, and other data related to your specific projects.
• Testing building codes, soil, and other building materials.
• Preparing costs of equipment, materials, and labor for your specific projects.
• Using different design software to plan transportation, hydraulic, and structural systems.
• Working with local, state, and federal agencies and other clients to confirm and work with them for your projects.
• Overseeing the overall work of each building, location, sites, and elevations.
• Managing the maintenance, repairs, and replacements of your projects.

A Day in the Life

• In the Office: Use design software to create blueprints, prepare reports, analyze technical data, draw up contracts, secure permits, and collaborate with architects, subcontractors, and other professionals.
• Onsite: Inspect the progress and performance of your current construction projects. Also oversee the resources ensuring safety regulations and provide technical guidance to resolve any issues that can occur during construction.
