Difference Between Exercise Science, Kinesiology, and Exercise Physiology

Excercise Science - Feb 2026

So, you love learning about the body and its functions, especially concerning physical movement. You know that you want to work in an exercise-related field but aren’t sure which field of study would be the best for you. In this article, we will break down the similarities and differences between exercise science, kinesiology, and exercise physiology so you know which one is the best fit for you and your career goals.

Kinesiology

The broadest study of the three, the word Kinesiology comes from the Greek “kinesis” meaning movement or motion (like in the word telekinesis), and “ology”, meaning the science or study of. Literally speaking, it means the science of human movement. Those who study Kinesiology look at the mechanics of movement, from anatomy and motor skills to physiology and biomechanics.

There are many jobs available to graduates with a bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology. These jobs will give you valuable experience in the field and allow you a lot of flexibility with your career options! You could work with people as a personal trainer or be on the corporate side and sell fitness equipment and apparel. If you are considering graduate school, more careers become available to you, like as a physical therapist.

Exercise Science

Exercise Science is not as broad as Kinesiology but is still considered an interdisciplinary field. As the name suggests, Exercise Science emphasizes applying the science of exercise, fitness, and nutrition to improve the body. Think of a bodybuilder who has a personalized diet and work routine to maximize their performance level. If it seems like they have it down to a science, that’s because they probably do!

There are many similar job opportunities that overlap with Kinesiology, such as being a personal trainer or wellness coach. However, as an Exercise Science major you have a stronger foundation in physiology and health science, therefore you have more options in the clinical field, especially if you pursue graduate school.

Exercise Physiology

The most specific degree of the three, exercise physiology narrows its field of study down to the functions and mechanisms of the body. Physiology is the study of living organisms and their parts, so exercise physiology is the scientific study of the mechanical and physiological processes involving human movement. These programs are often focused on rehabilitation, rebuilding strength, and preventing disease.

Again, there is overlap with both Kinesiology and Exercise Science. However, Exercise Physiology’s unique focus allows for options in occupational and physical therapy (with a graduate or professional degree), rehabilitation, and chronic disease prevention.

Conclusion

All of these studies help promote understanding of the body in motion, but each specialty has its own emphasis. Kinesiology is the broadest study of the body, Exercise Science applies scientific theory to real life exercises, and Exercise Physiology studies the functions and mechanisms in the body to promote healthy lifestyles. Each one is a rewarding path for a student looking to change lives through physical movement and healing the body.
