Is Interdisciplinary Studies a "legitimate" major?
Interdisciplinary Studies is absolutely a legitimate major! IDS is still rather new compared to more ‘traditional’ majors, so many people don’t know much about it. But it is rising in popularity, and for good reasons. IDS majors prepare for careers that both require expertise across multiple disciplines, as well as more traditional careers they can be well suited for. IDS students develop the skills of the occupation as well as the versatility that comes from proficiency in multiple disciplines.
What are the main differences between a traditional major and Interdisciplinary Studies?
With a traditional major, students take the classes that have already been prepared for them in that particular degree. With IDS, students take the classes from the components of their degree that they chose themselves. Both a traditional degree and an IDS degree will prepare students for their chosen occupation.
What are the benefits of graduation in Interdisciplinary Studies when I start my career? Will it be beneficial to my employers?
A lot of careers that are in high-demand can be accomplished with an IDS degree. All fields of work can use someone with an IDS skillset. Being fluent in multiple disciplines and having the skills acquired from them creates a well-rounded and innovative individual. This is something that all employers and all careers can benefit from.
Can an Interdisciplinary Studies degree prepare me for graduate school?
Graduate schools will highly value a student that is diversely-skilled and innovative. Just like any other degree, acceptance into and success in graduate school will depend on the student and on the school
Are there any setbacks to having an Interdisciplinary Studies degree?
