If you enjoy working with plants, you may find yourself drawn to several different degree paths; Horticulture, agriculture, agronomy, and botany are each disciplines about plants and their health and cultivation. Although they all work with plants, they each have a different approach and focus. They serve unique purposes and prepare students for different kinds of careers.

Horticulture combines plant science, design, and hands-on growing techniques. Agriculture, agronomy, and botany are similar fields to horticulture, and though they may sometimes overlap, understanding each one and their unique objectives will help you discover which path best aligns with your passion.

Horticulture

Horticulture is the study and application of plant cultivation for food, landscapes, and aesthetics. Horticulturists typically work on small-scale planting and focused cultivation. They are hands-on in their work, whether it be growing edible plants or using plants for design. They apply scientific research and principles to their plant growth. Horticulture is also a way to connect communities to local food productions.

Agriculture

Agriculture is the cultivation of plants and animals that are used for foods, fiber, and raw materials. It is a large-scale practice, operating on a broad acreage with a high output of plants and other resources, often focusing on a single crop over large fields.

Agronomy

Choosing the Right Discipline for You When deciding which plant science discipline to pursue, consider reflecting on your interests, strengths, and long-term goals. Ask yourself what aspects of plant work excite you most? Do you enjoy hands-on growing? Are you drawn to scientific research? Do you see yourself managing large fields or designing gardens and landscapes? Understanding what motivates you is key to choosing the right path.

Consider your Interests:

  • If you enjoy hands-on cultivation, plant propagation, greenhouse work, or landscape design, horticulture may be the best fit.
  • If you prefer large-scale food production or working with crops and livestock, explore agriculture.
  • If your interests lean toward soil science, crop systems, and sustainable farming research, you might be well-suited for agronomy.

  • Horticulture: small-scale, intensive growing, designing; work often occurs in greenhouses, nurseries, gardens, or landscape environments.
  • Agriculture: large-scale operation. Work mostly occurs in fields or with animals.
  • Agronomy: large-scaled areas and research environments focused on soils, crop rotations, and sustainable farm systems.
  • Botany: lab, field study, and academic settings centered on plant science and research.
