The Language of Math
Mathematics is considered a language in the field of science. It shares many features of language: vocabulary, grammar, syntax, and semantics.
Languages are tools for communicating ideas, and math is unique because it is universal and precise. For instance, 2 + 2 = 4 conveys the exact same meaning whether you are in Tokyo or Antarctica, or even on the Moon.
For physicists, mathematics allows physicists to describe and make predictions with physical laws. It is impossible to know too much about math, because you will need math to progress.
Physics is not Math
Despite their interplay, physics and math are not the same thing. Modern science creates models of how things work, but no model is 100% accurate. Math is a tool that can make precise models of reality, but it will never be an absolute truth.
You will use physics and math to use and improve diverse models of reality. The mathematical emphasis equips you with the language and tools you need to progress with increasingly advanced physics.
