BYU-Idaho Courses in Illustration Entertainment Design

Entertainment Illustration

Illustration at BYU-Idaho has two emphases you can choose from: Publishing and Entertainment Design. Each emphasis has its own course selection and focuses on different art skills. The entertainment design emphasis focuses more on animation and digital illustration.

Emphasis Core Courses

Some unique courses in the entertainment design emphasis degree include:

  • ART 342R – Entertainment Illustration I: Students in this course study things like world and character design, lighting, pacing, and storytelling. The class is focused on illustration for film, television, and video games.
  • ART 345R – 3D Digital Illustration: In this class, students learn to use 3D modeling and animation systems, like Autodesk Maya and Mudbox. Projects involve creating models, lighting and rendering scenes, and creating texture maps.
  • ART 392 – Business for the Professional Artist: This course teaches students professional business practices and how to run and promote their own business.
  • ART 441R – Illustration Senior Project: In this class, students practice visual storytelling, create web portfolios, and work on self-managed projects.
  • ART 443 – Illustration Capstone: This course teaches students how to network, make portfolio pieces, and build a personal brand.

How to Apply

Want to join the major? Be sure to submit an application after finishing the required courses. Admission to the major is based on portfolio work, pre-requisite courses, and proven illustration skills. To apply, students should:

  • Complete the Art Fundamentals Cluster.
  • Complete the courses in the Illustration Minor.
  • Submit a polished portfolio.
