Doug Berkey Collection

Osaka Expo

Douglas Berkey served a mission from February 1969 to February 1971 in the Japan Okinawa and Japan Central Missions. A cherished portion of his missionary experience included participating in the Mormon Pavilion groundbreaking and opening ceremonies associated with Osaka Expo ’70, then serving as a visitors’ tour guide for the first two months of activity. Doug served from December 1969 to April 1970 as the district leader for the Okamachi Branch, which became a key site for the Osaka pavilion planning and operations. He shared photographs, journal entries, news articles, and letters he wrote home during his service at the Mormon Pavilion. He is currently a professor emeritus at the University of Colorado, serves as the editor-in-chief of Dental Abstracts, and is chairman of the volunteer organization known as Global Dental Relief. He lives with his wife Gail in Centennial, CO.
