Joel Judkins graduated from Ricks College and went on to earn a master's degree in Speech and Language Pathology from Idaho State University. He worked an as speech and language pathologist for Magic Valley Speech and Language until 1996 when he joined the Department of Communications faculty at Ricks College, soon renamed BYU-Idaho.
