Holden Higginbotham studied biology from Truman State University before graduating from Brigham Young University with a bachelor's degree in zoology. He completed a doctorate degree in biomedical science, neuroscience, and cell biology, from the University of California-San Diego.

Dr. Higginbotham worked as a hydrology technician for the United Styate Forest Service in Provo, Utah, before pursuing his doctorate degree in California. After completing his doctorate he served at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he was a postdoctoral researcher and student mentor in biological sciences. In 2012 he joined the faculty in the Department of Biology at BYU-Idaho.

Dr. Higginbotham has published a large variety of scholarly articles for various research publications.
