Duane Adamson completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Utah with a bachelor's degree in political science. He then earned as master's degree at Utah State University in political science and completed doctorate work in foreign affairs from the University of Virginia.

Duane was an active part of the Mike Leavitt for Governor Campaign in the early 1990s as an area director. He then worked in the Utah Governor's Office as a deputy for communications. After completing his graduate work, he filled several professorships at James Madison University, BYU, and the University of Virginia. In 2006 he joined the faculty in the Department of History, Geography, and Political Science at BYU-Idaho. In 2014 he accepted a position in the College of Language and Letters at BYU-Idaho, serving as an associate dean for professional development and mentored student research. He filled the role of department chair in the Department of History, Geography, and Political Science from 2018 to 2024.
