Biography

Cheryl Empey started her career in the Family Consumer Sciences profession before she started kindergarten. She learned to sew and cook for her dolls and older siblings. She loved to teach and organize. She had a very talented mother that shared her love of all things beautiful and domestic.

Her father was a secondary Ag teacher and took her to her first CTE conference at the age of 11. During high school, Cheryl served as a chapter officer in FCCLA (FHA). She had three different FCS instructors and loved to see the impact each of them had on their students.

From both, her parents, and instructors, she found success in what they taught. That was when she decided to become an FCS Educator.

Ms. Empey received her Associates in Home Economics Education at Ricks College, her bachelor’s from Utah State University of Family Consumer Sciences Education and her Master of Family Consumer Sciences Extension and Education in Human Environments.

As a college student, she served as the National Student Chair for the American Association of Family & Consumer Sciences. She currently is serving on the International Federation of Home Economic-US board.

Her Doctorate was received from Idaho’s Land Grant University, the University of Idaho, in Education.

Dr. Empey has worked in the profession in both, Extension & Education for over 20 years. From organizing sewing camps, coaching bowl teams, training afterschool staff and judging county fairs, Cheryl has enjoyed seeing FCS make a difference in the lives of youth.

At BYUI, she has shared with young adults her passion for the profession and life skills. Here she has taught several courses and topics: intro to FCS education, introduction to foods, meal management, food service management, resource management, fashion merchandizing, education to employment, textiles, and interior design. The many life skills taught in these courses have empower her students to progress towards a better life for themselves and their families.
