Aaron Miller, Director of Jazz StudiesAaron Miller likes music. He likes old music, new music, folk music and dance music. Music has always played an important part in his life. As a young boy, playing the bass in jazz clubs, pit and community orchestras helped Aaron find meaning and security during his growing up years. He was drawn to the string bass because it was present in almost all types of music and allowed for a variety of performance opportunities. Aaron’s enjoyment of music led him to complete a Master’s in jazz performance and pedagogy from the University of Colorado and a Doctorate of Musical Arts in double bass performance from Northwestern University. Aaron’s performances have included touring with the Glenn Miller Orchestra, the second national tour of The Producers, and the South American premier of Macedonian composer Zivojin Glisic’s Concerto for Double Bass. Sometimes, Aaron teaches music. He enjoys working with collegiate bassists at BYU-Idaho, encouraging young musicians at the Red Lodge Music Festival, and instructing the next generation of jazz musicians in eastern Idaho. The relative cultural isolation and slower pace of Rexburg suits Aaron’s other interests of spending time with his family, pursuing endurance sports, riding his bicycle, avoiding social media in all its forms, and doing anything with his Great Dane Mingus. Mingus would prefer that the order of Aaron’s passions were feed Mingus more, play with Mingus more, allow Mingus to sit on his lap more, take Mingus camping more and feed Mingus...more. It’s Aaron’s hope that we will all pursue what we enjoy more and look for ways to support each other in those pursuits.
