On Saturday, August 1, there will be a community cleanup event near R-Mountain in Rexburg.
The group called “See A Need-East Idaho” has organized the event so the large buildup of trash in the area can go to the dump, where it belongs.
Group member David Wilson said the area accumulates quite a bit of trash because of the construction dump nearby and because of target shooting.
“A lot of the stuff we actually pick up is very clearly something that somebody came out to dump…because they simply didn’t want to pay the dump fees,” Wilson said.
People who wish to attend the cleanup should bring their own gloves, rakes, magnets and other supplies to help make the cleanup easier. Trash bags will be provided, and the group will get trucks to take the trash to the dump.
Wilson said that taking care of our public lands is important so that everyone can have a chance to enjoy them.
“Nature is God’s gift to us, and we have plenty of it out here in Idaho,” Wilson said. “Nothing ruins a great day out like seeing trash piled up…it’s such an easy thing to pick up your trash.”
The cleanup should last from 10 a.m. until about 2 p.m.
People who are interested in helping should try to RSVP on the Facebook event page. The number of RSVPs will help Wilson know how many trucks to get to haul trash to the dump, but he said that the most important thing is that people attend.
“Show up [the] day of…[and] we won’t be hurting for having you,” Wilson said.
