Shredding old documents can be tedious.
Century 21 High Desert, Alliance Title and Escrow and Washington Federal in Rexburg are hosting Shred Day on May 18 at Century 21 High Desert from 10 a.m.-noon.
People can take up to four boxes of old documents and get them shredded.
Beth Hanson, real estate agent for Century 21 High Desert, said people can come as many times as they want, but it does need to be separate carloads containing four or fewer boxes.
People hold onto documents for many years and because they contain important information, shredding them is the safest way to dispose of them, Hanson said.
Western Records Destruction is licensed and bonded, and will be accepting the documents on Saturday.
She explained there are many ways our personal security can be compromised such as leaving around check stubs or receipts that have account numbers on them. Disposing of them safely is critical for protecting personal security.
Real estate agencies, title companies and banks deal with sensitive documents every day, which is why the three businesses decided to host this event together.
Hanson came up with the idea to host Shred Day when she saw a local TV station in Seattle do a shred day, and many people attended.
“I thought that would be a great service to offer our community,” she said.
She invites the community to come and dispose of their old documents, even if it is one small box.
For those who can’t attend the event or don’t have access to a paper shredder, Hanson encourages people to check with their bank or contact Century 21 High Desert and they can direct you to options for getting documents shredded.
This event is also good for recycling.
“You’ve got the option of securely shredding them, taking care of that sensitive information but you’re also doing a good service for the environment and recycling instead of putting it in the garbage,” she said.
If the turnout is good this year, Hanson hopes to make this an annual event. They will be offering giveaways for the first 20 cars in attendance and have donuts available to those who come early.
They encourage all to come out and support them this weekend.
