Idaho National Laboratory and Batelle Energy Alliance are reaching out to members of the nuclear industry to help develop new modular nuclear reactors. These microreactors will provide a more portable nuclear energy source that will aid INL in its mission to produce net-zero emissions by 2031.
"We are gathering information from suppliers from utilities, and others that operate nuclear powerplants and are in the process of designing new microreactors, small modular reactor designs. So the input is from the nuclear industry," said Jhansi Kandasamy, the net-zero director at INL.
In the world of engineering and science, modular refers to items that are built with standardized units or dimensions for flexibility and to allow for a variety of uses.
