Elder Cornish

Elder J. Devn Cornish, a General Authority Seventy of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, will address 2,080 graduates at Brigham Young University-Idaho's 2017 Spring Semester Commencement on Tuesday, July 18. The event will be held at 5:45 p.m. in the BYU-Idaho Center.

The university will award 1,695 bachelor's degrees and 404 associate degrees. Of the graduates, 1,245 are women and 835 are men. More than 50 percent have served as missionaries for the Church.Elder Cornish was sustained as a General Authority Seventy of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in April 2011. At the time of his call, he had been serving as a member of the Sixth Quorum of the Seventy in the North America Southeast Area. He is currently serving as the Assistant Executive Director of the Church History Department. 

Elder Cornish has served in numerous Church callings, including full-time missionary in the Guatemala-El Salvador Mission, elders quorum president, ward executive secretary, ward mission leader, ward Young Men president, bishop, high priests group leader, stake president, president of the Dominican Republic Santiago Mission (2003-2006), and Area Seventy. 

Elder Cornish received a bachelor of arts in biology from Johns Hopkins University in 1975. In 1978, he received a doctor of medicine, also from Johns Hopkins University. He completed his pediatric residency at the Boston Children's Hospital at Harvard University in 1981. In 1985, he completed a neonatology fellowship program at Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center. Subsequently, he was Professor and Chairman, and later a Vice Chairman in the Department of Pediatrics at Emory University School of Medicine. 

John Devn Cornish was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, on April 12, 1951. He married Elaine Simmons in August 1973. They are the parents of six children. 

Accompanying Elder Cornish at BYU-Idaho's spring commencement will be Elder Kim B. Clark, General Authority Seventy and Commissioner of the Church Educational System. Clark served as president of BYU-Idaho from 2005-15.
