Why do we have hymns? (After the Lord's last supper on the night before he died, in Matthew 26:30 we read that Jesus sang. "when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.") Singing unifies us as a church, and community and knits our hearts together.
Col.3:16 Let The Word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another in Psalms and Hymns and Spiritual Songs singing with grace in your heart to The Lord.
D & C 25:12 "The song of the righteous is a prayer unto me and it shall be answered with a blessing upon their heads.”
Singing is a prayer to God. Hymns are scripture.
Singing is worship to God. Psalms 96:2 "sing to the Lord, bless his name; tell of his salvation from day to day."
Singing is praise to God. Psalms 117:1 "praise the Lord, all ye nations: praise him all ye people." How easy it is to sing praises. Praises to God are written for us within the hymns.
