Lane Williams joined the faculty of the communication department in 1996. He has taught communication, journalism courses–and, occasionally, Book of Mormon classes, since then. He is a recipient of the Kiplinger Fellowship at the Ohio State University, where he received his master's degree; and a Merrill Fellowship at the University of Maryland, where he received his doctorate. His research interests include the news media's relationship with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

He served a mission in Okayama, Japan. He has served in numerous Church callings, including twice as a Scoutmaster. He currently serves in the bishopric of the 97th ward on campus.

He and his wife, Laurie, have four children and are the proud grandparents of one grandson, Robert.
