This position serves as a member of a team of broadcast engineering professionals, with frequent assignments to lead projects, teams and strategic research initiatives. The Senior Broadcast Engineer works closely with end users to determine business needs and aligns broadcast system capabilities to meet those needs as efficiently as possible. This position reports to the Manager of Engineering and also works with other managers at BYUB to provide cross functional support to all areas of the division.Requirements / Qualifications Essential Functions Maintain Broadcast Infrastructure Maintains and modifies broadcast RF (radio frequency) for both studio and remote sites, digital and web/internet broadcast equipment to maximize the quality of the broadcast signal and ensure that broadcasts are not interrupted. Serves as an active member of the 24/7 on-call engineering rotation for all systems, including IT-based systems Evaluates remote sites for broadcast feasibility and specifies any necessary facility/site changes Provides and oversees routine and emergency maintenance of division wide broadcast systems in accordance with industry accepted best practices and standards as well as FCC compliance. These systems include, but are not limited to: (Primary) Television and Radio Transmitters, Satellite uplink/downlink systems, Broadcast Encoders and Decoders, Television and Radio Broadcast Automation, Studio Equipment (Secondary) Computers, Media Servers, Media and IT Networks, Media Management, Web Streaming Equipment, Media and Business Backup Systems These systems support 24/7 media production and distribution activities, which requires that they operate at all times to precise and reliable technical performance standards. Broadcast Engineering Design & Integration Designs, develops solutions for and applies engineering concepts to broadcast transmission facilities to meet the organization's broadcast requirements. Creates equipment lists, floor plans, rack and console elevations, and audio/video control diagrams. Creates test plans and test systems for broadcast equipment. Ensures proper integration of test systems by working with maintenance engineers. Function as the lead engineer and project manager on small to large projects with teams of cross functional members, including responsibility for evaluating all reasonable options and making presentations to management. Manage expectations of stakeholders, including management, throughout the project and product lifecycle. Provide input to management about potential performance issues related to members of project teams. Provides peer review for other team members performing similar functions. Event Support Provide technical support for assigned BYUB productions. Work with producers, directors and talent to determine technical needs. Research Strategic Options and Industry Trends Keep abreast of trends, best practices and standards within the industry and provide information to management regarding potential impact on current and future infrastructure needs and regulatory compliance. Attend trainings and conferences as appropriate to maintain needed skills and industry knowledge. Develop close working relationships with all end users to ensure that systems are meeting their needs. Education/Experience Minimum required: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in a related field plus at least 3 years of experience in an engineering discipline relevant to broadcast engineering (i.e., Electrical Engineering, RF Engineering, and/or Information Technology), OR equivalent combination of education and experience. Preferred: Master’s degree or equivalent experience in a related field plus at least 5 years experience in an engineering discipline relevant to broadcast engineering (i.e., Electrical Engineering, RF Engineering and/or Information Technology), OR equivalent combination of education and experience.
