John & Kay Merrell
John was born in Washington DC and grew up in northern Virginia. He graduated from Brigham Young University with a degree in Economics (1972) and from Stanford Law School (1975, JD). He has practiced law in Virginia for 41 years. His church experience includes serving as Bishop, High Priest group leader, Elder’s quorum president, Young Men’s President, and teaching seminary. John currently is an ordinance worker in the Washington DC temple and serves as ward Sunday School President. His hobbies include singing as well as “all things French” which began when he served a full time mission to the Franco Belgium mission from 1966 to 1969.
Kay was born in Salt Lake City, but spent her teenage years in northern California. Kay graduated from Stanford in 1972. Kay and John met in the single’s ward at Stanford and were married in the Oakland temple. Kay worked as a financial planner for Wells Fargo Bank in San Francisco until John graduated from law school and they moved to Virginia. Kay’s church service includes serving as Young Women’s President, Primary President, stake camp director, and counselor and teacher in each of the auxiliaries. She currently serves as ward organist, Sunday School teacher and “empty nester” coordinator.
John and Kay are the parents of six children and seven grandchildren.
