What is a Writing Center?
Writing Centers exist all over the country at nearly every major university. They are places where student writers talk and listen to other writers. At BYU-Idaho, our major mission as a Writing Center is to help students and faculty REVISE their work until they are satisfied it has said what they meant it to say.
-
The Writing Center is a free service for all BYU-Idaho students and faculty. Centrally located on the second floor of the McKay Library, the Center provides a relaxed environment for students to receive help with college writing. Students meet with peer Writing Assistants who provide personalized feedback and support.
-
Trained assistants help students to analyze their own work. Assistants help students draft, organize, revise, and edit college-level papers. They work well as an impartial audience and ask questions to stimulate critical thinking and encourage revision.
-
The Center recommends 20-minute sessions, but students may return as often as they wish, even to receive help on the same assignment later the same day.
-
Assistants offer help with essays and research papers, as well as with résumés, cover letters, and proposals. We also answer questions about documentation, usage, and grammar.
Important--
Assistants are not allowed to proofread student papers; however, they teach grammar principles whenever necessary
