Dress & Grooming Standards for Campus Events
Event Dress
All music, dance and theatre events sponsored by the College of Performing and Visual Arts require event dress.
Men
- Dress pants or suit with a collared shirt and tie
- Dress shoes (no flip flops or casual footwear)
Women
- Modest dress or skirt and blouse (denim articles are not considered appropriate event dress for men or women)
- Dress shoes (no flip flops or casual footwear)
Refer to the face of your ticket for an individual event's dress code.
Classroom Dress
A clean and well-cared-for appearance should be maintained at all times.
Men
- Pants, slacks and jeans should not be patched, faded, frayed or torn and must be ankle length
- Shorts are not permitted
- Hairstyles should be clean and neat, avoiding extreme styles or colors, and trimmed above the collar leaving the ear uncovered
- Caps or hats should not be worn in campus buildings
- Sideburns should not extend below the earlobe or onto the cheek
- If worn, mustaches should be neatly trimmed and may not extend beyond the corners of the mouth
- Men are expected to be clean shaven; beards are not acceptable
- Earrings and other body piercings are unacceptable
- Shoes should be worn in all public campus areas (flip flops and other casual footwear are inappropriate on campus)
Women
- Clothing is inappropriate when it is sleeveless, strapless, backless or revealing; has slits above the knee or is formfitting
- Dresses and skirts must be knee length or longer
- Pants, slacks or jeans should not be patched, faded, frayed or torn and must be ankle length
- Capris or shorts are not permitted
- Hairstyles should be clean and neat, avoiding extreme styles and unnatural colors.
- Caps or hats should not be worn in buildings
- Excessive ear piercing (more than one pair) and all other body piercings are inappropriate
- Shoes should be worn in all public campus areas (flip flops and other casual footwear are inappropriate on campus)
Semiformal Dance Attire
Men
- A tuxedo is optional
- Church attire, such as a sports coat or dressy sweater, is recommended
- A dress shirt and tie, formal half-collar shirt without a tie, or a turtleneck with a sport coat and dress slacks are acceptable
- Dress shoes are required
- Not acceptable: tennis or athletic shoes, t-shirts, kilts, jeans or grubby attire
Women
- A formal dress is optional
- Church dress is recommended
- A modest dress with the hemline or slits knee length or below is acceptable
- Dress shoes are required
- Not acceptable: tennis or athletic shoes, sleeveless dresses, spaghetti straps, low-cut necklines, immodest use of see-through and unlined materials, open-back dresses below the shoulder blade, t-shirts, jeans or grubby attire
Special Theme Dance Attire
Attire should be consistent with university dress standards at all events. Appropriate dress will be specified prior to the dance.
