by Bertolt Brecht, translated by James and Tania Stern with W. H. Auden
Performed by special arrangement with Samuel French, Inc.
Directed by: Richard Clifford
Using his renowned minimalist narrative style, playwright Bertolt Brecht wrests an ancient Chinese story (echoing the Judgment of Solomon) into a politically charged and complex parable set in the Georgian Caucasus. The story follows the tribulations of a young servant girl, Grusha, who, at great personal cost, saves and nurtures the abandoned son of a deposed ruler by claiming the child as her own. When the child’s mother returns and needs the infant to regain her wealth, Grusha must endure a frightful trial at the hands of the unruly judge, Azdak. Through this cautionary tale, Brecht teaches us that society is a better place when rights are earned through acts of integrity and compassion rather than inherited as entitlements.
The play speaks boldly to humanity: “What there is should belong to those that are good for it.” It invites us to consider how justice and mercy can coexist, and to what extent we are responsible to our fellow beings.

Georg and Amilia are two feuding clerks in a European parfumerie during the 1930’s who secretly find solace in their anonymous romantic pens pals, little knowing their respective correspondents are none other than each other. Funny, intelligent, honest and sentimental, “She Loves Me” is a warm romantic comedy with an endearing innocence and a touch of old world elegance and nostalgia, yet as universal and relevant as ever in this age of internet romances.
