Purpose ~ A Need for Renewal
President Ricks was a man of vision and insight who knew the power of education. As a pioneer leader, he was accustomed to the change required to succeed. He would fully appreciate the search for new knowledge and discovery that require constant, rapid change today.
However, he might be surprised to see the extent of the knowledge explosion that now exists in the world. The challenges are greater than ever to provide students with the tools they need to enter the work force. Never before in human history have so many changes occurred simultaneously, nor caused such widespread opportunity for global interaction and cultural understanding as is happening right now.
The faculty of BYU-Idaho are employed because of their solid teaching skills, their scholarship, and their genuine concern for students. With these exceptional teachers, BYU-Idaho produces intelligent, eager, well-prepared students. This unique and effective learning environment prevails at BYU-Idaho and is one of its hallmarks.
Administrators and faculty are aware, however, of the monumental challenges and the unprecedented opportunities for preparing students to serve. The faculty understands it has a solemn obligation to ensure students will graduate and leave well prepared to cope with the demands of a rapidly changing, vastly restructured global society.
To grasp those opportunities, however, and increase their effectiveness as teachers, BYU-Idaho Faculty in every discipline must not only draw upon the constant flow of new knowledge that the world is producing but also experience renewal.
Sustaining faculty members and their teaching mission requires BYU-Idaho to support its teachers in their quest to improve their teaching skills. Through renewal teachers can stay abreast of the constant flow of new information in their disciplines. This periodic rejuvenation and revitalization is directly reflected in the ability of teachers who are seeking to learn.
With parental love and devotion, through the years of its infancy, President Ricks watched over the school that bears his name. While discouragement and disappointment pressed hard from all sides, he built a foundation that has secured the remarkable growth and progress that exemplify this college and has prepared it to take the necessary steps to become a very unique university. Now you have an opportunity to help secure and strengthen the same educational foundation that President Ricks struggled so long and hard to put into place.
