The mission of the Department of Home and Family is to promote and teach every element of healthy homes and families. We teach courses in: Family, Parenting, Marriage, Foods and Nutrition, Clothing Construction and Apparel, Child Development, Professional Preschool, Culinary Arts, Interior Design, Money Management and Home and Family Management.
• Build testimonies of the restored Gospel of Jesus Christ and recognize that the home and family are central to the Creator’s Eternal Plan.
• Teach that the care and stewardship of living, feeding, clothing, teaching, and protecting one another is but a mirror image of the care and stewardship of the Lord toward his own.
• Teach principles of the Gospel and secular truth, i.e. theories, research philosophies, and practical skills that help strengthen the home and the family.
• Prepare students for employment, further education, and to be exceptional mothers and fathers, husbands and wives.
• Provide students with a holistic experience in home and family education including hands-on experience, professional societies, internships and service.

The Degree of Family and Consumer Sciences Education provides a holistic approach to the study of home and family. The program teaches courses designed to:
Teach doctrine, principles, theory, and skills to help maintain and strengthen the home as the most effective institution in society for impacting the well being of the family unit.
Provide a well balanced education for students focusing on the importance of home and family. Classes include: family relations, money management, clothing construction and apparel, textiles, interior design, child development, foods and nutrition, home and family management, and with a secondary education component.
Prepare students for careers in secondary education, graduate school, and professions relating to home and family education, children, and families.
Strengthen students’ testimonies in the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Bachelor of Science in Family & Consumer Sciences Education Composite
Family and consumer sciences educators (students) will be able to:
1. Teach effectively within the wide scope of the Family and Consumer Sciences area.
2. Engage in many classroom activities, home experiences, extracurricular activities, professional association events, simulated experiences such as those in preschool centers, and laboratory experience – particularly in foods, nutrition, clothing, and textiles.
3. Lead field trips, obtain guest speakers, and assign individual projects.
4. Select and prepare learning aids for classroom use i.e. textbooks, computer-aided instruction using media, and study guides.
5. Ensure that learning activities from professional technical youth organizations are integrated into classroom instruction.
6. Prepare lesson plans and teaching activities based on state standards.
7. Academic and career advising of students.
8. Collaborate with teachers, parents, and community by:
o Completing federal, state, and local forms
o Supervise extracurricular activities
o Serve on committees o Assist county extension agents
o Judge district and state FCCLA projects
9. Assessing students’ progress.
10. Manage displays, exhibits, and laboratory.
11. Understand age appropriate instruction throughout the life span.
12. Attempt to see and be aware of the learning process from the students’ perspective.

Purposes for Family Consumer Sciences Education Society:
• BYU-I student section and chapters for both AAFCS professional association and for College Age FCCLA • Networking with peers and professors
• Student Leadership Opportunities- Students serve in officer positions
• Enriched learning through Service, Workshops and Activities outside of class
• Provide a venue to receive updates to Major classes, schedules, and requirements
• Prepare students to compete in the FCCLA National Competitions pilot.
• Plan Professional Development experiences for FCS peers
• Provide personal greetings and information concerning Society to majors and potential majors.
• Act as a positive model of a FCS Ed. major.
• Plan meetings, workshops, and projects for the semester. Reserve rooms, contact speakers, and notify members of the calendar of events.
• Encourage members to attend and participate in local, affiliate, and national meetings.
• Conduct FCS promotional events.
• Make committee appointments.
• Conduct officer elections at appropriate time.
• Plan for installation of officers.
• Keep adequate records of activities.
• File semester reports with appropriate person/office.
• Coordinate plans/programs to meet the needs of All FCS majors.
• Communicate to FCS Instructors of all plans and goals.
The first Lake Bonneville Summit was held on the BYU-I campus on Friday, April 24, 2009 to commemorate and generate positive professional FCS networks in the Southeast Idaho area. Students and Faculty host a formal dinner and workshops for area FCS professionals.
