"True Unity and Willing Communication between the horse and man is not something that can be handed to someone - it has to be learned. It has to come from the inside of a person and the inside of the horse"

Introduction

The equestrian program at BYU-Idaho is making changes.  All classes are taught by student peer instructors and we are able to offer different levels of riding and participation for students.  Basic horsemanship I and II  provide the foundation needed for a safe and enjoyable riding experience.  After completing the Basic classes, there are multiple entry level modules to help teach different events horses are used for.   If you want to further develop your skills and participate in more challenging events, then the advanced levels await you. Safety, skill development and wholesome fun are the core elements of the program. Explore this site further to find out where you want to start your journey. All classes are repeatable. Transportation is provided if needed.

Class Levels

  • Basic Classes:  Consist of Basic Horsemanship I and Basic Horsemanship II.
  • Intro Modules:  After taking the basic classes, these classes offer a general overview of some widely known events done on horseback.
  • Advanced Modules :  These classes offer an opportunity to refine the events previously taught in the Intro Modules.

Skipping Prerequisites

If you have already completed the former AS 140 Basic Equitation or AS 240 Intermediate Equitation, you are considered a Basic Rider, and are therefore eligible to participate in the Intro Modules.

If you believe your riding skills are beyond the Basic Classes, contact one of the Peer Horsemanship leaders for permission to participate in the Intro Modules and Advanced Modules. However, it is highly recommended that you participate in both Basic Classes in order to move on to the Intro Modules.
