H Drive Forum Recap
Forum held June 16, 2008, 7-8 pm, TAY 120
Focus of Forum: Discussing the reasons for the removal of the Student Home Directories (Jupiter web drives) from all campus computers.
Main Points of Discussion
- Students will no longer be able to add files to their H Drives beginning August 1, 2008. They will be ‘read only' after that date. Students will still be able to download files from their H Drives onto personal storage devices.
- All H Drives will be completely erased on October 31, 2008.
- Campus-wide storage will no longer be provided to students after Oct. 31, 2008.
Pros of Action
- Student storage needs will be met through personal storage devices (i.e. thumb drives, personal pc's, laptops).
- Costs will be cut tremendously, and the saving will go towards improving the bandwidth on campus.
- Students will have better access to personal data by using personal storage devices.
Cons of Action
- No back up for documents saved on personal storage devices.
- Students may lose data initially by not being aware of the H Drive removal.
- Faculty will no longer be able to save class work on the Jupiter network.
Side notes
- H Drives are also known as Webshare when accessing your personal student account.
- Students are encouraged to begin downloading their needed files to personal storage devices by the end of the semester.
- Incoming freshman for the Fall will not be given H Drives.
