Book Buyback Policy
"The bookstore has a quota of books they can accept. However, the quota is not determined by the bookstore but by the teachers. Once the quota has been filled, the book store attempts to locate other third-party buyers that might be interested in the book, but if they cannot find anyone to buy it, they cannot accept it. Also, it is important to know that the bookstore is one of the only areas on campus that is not funded by the church and tithing money. The bookstore would love to take all of the books back, but in order for them to be able to pay their personal expenses; they are unable to do so.
The BYU-Idaho bookstore has one of the highest buyback ratings; i.e. more students return their books to the bookstore here on average than most other schools. However, even though they hold one of the highest buyback ratings, they are one of the lowest on the ladder when it comes to overall profit. This goes to show that they lose a substantial amount trying to make it easier on the students. Every book returned to the bookstore, whether bought new or used, is bought back for 60% of the new price. BYU Provo also has a similar process, but most other bookstores are at about 40-50%."
