Thomas Hinckley, a scholar of hymnody, donated his collection of hymnals to Special Collections & Archives. Although many books within the collection are from an LDS background, many other Chrisitan faiths are represtented. The collection consists of over 150 hymnals, choral books, song books, and books on teaching and training.
This collection provides a wonderful resource for studying the history of hymns and understanding changes to the usage and writing of hymns. Thomas Hinckley came to believe that with the Restoration of the gospel, there was also a restoration in hymnody: a plainer, simpler, but more powerful style. These are valuable resources for the the Annual Hymn Festival held on campus.
