15 March - Finance

One member of our society has had the unique experience in working with Personal Investment and they shared their experience and advice on how to effeciently manage money.  Another member shared some insights on how to effectively buy and sell stocks and use them to create a retirement fund.

 

1 March - Elise Dungan

Elise Dungan, BYUIAS Scholarship Vice President, gave a great presentation about getting paid to go to school!

 

15 February - Miles Murphy

Miles Murphy, an enthusiastic student of music and arts who has over 8000 CD's in his basement, spoke to the society about how the Gospel informs our musical choices and how the great composers of all time played a key role in the restoration of the Gospel.

  

1 February - Gary Purse

Brother Gary Purse, a World Religion Teacher here on campus, came and spoke to the Society about other religions.  He spoke about how they have some truth, and we need to respect that and to learn more about them.

 

18 January - Duane Adamson

Duane Adamson spoke to the society about the policies of the current U.S. administration.  His presentation, entitled "The Bush Doctrine of Preemption: Unique or an American Legacy?" showed the correlations of President Bush's political policies to that of former policies in the United States history.  His message echoed a nature vs. nurture theme, proposing nurture to be the major contributor regarding political views.  (18th January 2007)          

 

11 January - Opening Social

  Over 100 people were in attendance. After some officer presentations about the Society, those in attendance asked questions about the future of the society.

  Following this, those in attendance got to know one another, had some treats, and tested their mind with some Challenge Questions (prizes for the first 3 to get all 4 answers right).

 

7 December - Knowledge Bowl

On Pearl Harbor Day, the Society met and held a Battleship-style knowledge bowl contest. Officers Amberlee Green and Noreen Beus planned and hosted the event. Two teams raced to be the first to answer the questions correctly that Amberlee put up on the screen. The winning team got to "attack" their opponents' ships (on the chalkboard)--after so many hits, the ship would sink. The winner was the team who sunk all of the ships of their opponent. The teams were very competitive. A reporter from the Scroll came and took pictures; see the last issue from this semester.

 

16 November - Forum Follow-Up and Group Discussion

The Academic Society met Thursday, November 16th to discuss the Larry EchoHawk's presentation at the University Forum earlier that day. Larry EchoHawk is a professor of law at BYU. Larry discussed what we as individuals can do to improve the world around us, and the American dream, for future generations. The Society further discussed our role as individuals in doing this.

 

2 November - Hannah Bowman and Friends

Hannah taught the group about "Experiential Learning" and then led us through a series of activities that taught team work, problem solving, trust, and cooperation.

 

  

19 October - Forum Follow-Up and Group Discussion

The Society met and discussed the presentation made by Gary R. Flake, which was given as part of the Brady Howell Lecture Series. Brother Flake is the Director of LDS Humanitarian Emergency Response. Brother Flake spoke of the various ways that the church is making a difference in the world. The society discussed various ways that each individual member could make a difference in the world around them. Some of the ways included helping others, becoming excited about learning, and becoming involved outside the classroom.

 

5 October - Max Checketts

"Take some risks in your education" - Max Checketts, the Academic Vice President here at BYU-Idaho, spoke of developing ourselves through taking risks to learn new things. He encouraged students to focus on gaining knowledge, then become involved and search for new ways to apply what you learn. "If you don't apply it, you won't learn it." In short, be courageous and take some risks--you'll enrich your education.

 

27 September - Dr. Stephen R. Covey

"Success after Graduation" - The Society had a special opportunity to have Dr. Stephen R. Covey come and give a presentation. The majority was dedicated to answering questions from the Society members. We learned many things about how to be successful in all areas of our lives. It was a great experience!

 

21 September - Elections

Members of the Society elected new Vice Presidents, Public Relations Officers, and a Treasurer.

 

7 September - David D. Peck

"Conflict in Lebanon" - Dr. David D. Peck of the BYU-Idaho History Department gave a presentation about the historical background for the conflict in the Middle East, specifically Lebanon. A Q&A Session followed.
