While some students go to the John W. Hart Building swimming pool to work out or have fun with friends, there is much more going on every Monday and Wednesday nights– water polo and inner tube water polo.

Students compete in RecSports inner tube water polo. Those not interested in playing competitive inner tube water polo can play traditional water polo Monday nights at 10 p.m. Both newcomers and experienced water polo players are welcome.
“I play pickup games every Monday night, and I love it. The other guys and I are trying really hard to get an official water polo league going, aside from the inner tube water polo league. If we ever get a water polo league up and running, it will be amazing,” said Ben Metro, a freshman studying health science.
Many of the students who go to play water polo have some experience, but newcomers are welcome. Water polo is a game much like soccer. There are two goals, one on each end of the pool, and the players have similar positions. The object of the game is to get the ball into the other team’s goal by passing the ball.
“Water polo looks like a lot of fun, and I am going to sign up to play inner tube water polo next semester,” said David Boyer, a freshman studying music.
Aside from the Monday night pickup games after Home Evening, there is also inner tube water polo. “Inner tube water polo is just as fun as water polo, and the only difference is that inner tube water polo is more restrictive in that you have to move around in an inner tube,” said Andrew Berglund, a freshman studying health science.
Students say that participating in water polo or inner tube water polo can give students an opportunity to bond with fellow BYU–I students to make new friends.
If students don’t find the name of the game to be intriguing, students who play water polo suggest giving it a try.
Some students that play water polo on Monday nights at 10 p.m. or in the inner tube water polo league originally thought that water polo didn’t sound very fun.
“I decided to give inner tube water polo a shot and signed up for the league. It has turned out to be a lot of fun,” Doughty said.
Students can play traditional water polo on Monday nights with other students who organize scrimmages each week or play inner tube water polo with RecSports.
