Rec sports brings different levels of competition

It’s that time again: the time that all BYU-Idaho students on intramural teams look forward to. It’s tournament time.

This past week, all recreational sports started their tournaments. There are seven recreational sports available winter semester for students who want to participate: basketball, battleship, bowling, dodgeball, floor hockey and volleyball.

The sports with more participants have different levels of competition so anyone can play. This is so the competition is even tougher among those who are more skilled than those who are less experienced.

For all of the sports, the tournament is single elimination. So, with such high stakes, the games are a little more intense than the regular season.

John Pearson, a junior studying business finance, has been on three different recreational sports teams this semester and knows what it’s like to play in the added pressure and intensity of the tournament.

“The tournament season of Rec Sports is the best time of the semester. All previous games, blunders, losses, mistakes go out the window; even the rankings don’t matter. Anyone can show up at any given time and win it all, to earn what every rec sports participant desires: a shirt,” Pearson said.

Everyone on the championship team gets one of those prized T-shirts. The shirt lets everyone know that the person wearing it was on a championship team.

All sports tournaments will continue this week, and the champions will be named by Friday or Saturday. The schedules for the remaining games can be found across the hall from the recreational sports office in the John W. Hart Building. □
