Not room enough for the two of us

Balls flying, people diving and prisoners attacking their foes. Another war? No — just extreme dodgeball.

The Sports Activities program organized a dodgeball tournament Saturday, Dec. 1, in the John W. Hart Building. The tournament consisted of six teams ready for an intense day of dodgeball to the extreme.

The teams started out with preliminary games to decide the rankings. Two teams, the Ballers and the Dirty South, were automatically the favorites.

The Ballers annihilated their opponents in the first two games but lost a close game against the Dirty South in the final preliminary game.

Half of the Dirty South team had played on the same team during the summer semester. They lost all their games in the season but were finally able to start working together, only to lose a game by one point in the tournament.

“This is our chance to redeem ourselves,” said Jenna Hatch, a freshman studying generals.

The Ballers seemed like the only team to stop the Dirty South from taking the championship.

“Not just anybody can play dodgeball,” said Eric Vail, a junior studying construction management, and a member of the Ballers. “It’s a calling.”

But Vail would learn, as Proverbs 16:18 states, “Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before the fall.”

The event was single-elimination, which meant that if a team lost a game, they were kicked out of the tournament.

“It has a sudden-death intensity. You gotta bring your game in every game,” said Jill Hancock, a senior studying health science.

The Ballers and the Dirty South played separate teams in their first game of the tournament. The games were filled with heated competition. Tempers flew as much as the balls.

“That’s why they don’t have [dodgeball] as a season game, because people couldn’t control their anger,” said Kevin Magelsen, a senior studying health science and a member of the Fireballs team.

After some intense games, the two remaining teams were not the expected Ballers and Dirty South, but the Ave. Joes and Fireballs. These two teams came up from behind and conquered the reigning champions.

The final game was close but in the end, the Fireballs dominated, resulting in a score of 4-2. □
