Digging Volleyball
Jana Allen, a senior studying health science and the competitive sports volleyball manager, described Tasha Harper, a junior studying medical assisting, as a great athlete with a great attitude and spirit. Scroll sport’s Jessica Gower had a chance to get to know this great athlete a little better.
JG: How long have you been playing volleyball?
TH: For about 11 years.
JG: What position do you play?
TH: I play all around, but I love playing outside or defensive. Libero [designated back-row player, a ball-control specialist] was really fun to play, but you don’t get to move around as much.
JG: Did you have the opportunity to play volleyball at a different college?
TH: Yes. I played for two years at Salt Lake Community College. It was a blast, but I finished my two years there, graduated and came on up to BYU-Idaho.
JG: After playing on a competitive team, how do you feel about BYU-I’s program?
TH: I like playing at BYU-I. It’s very relaxed. Playing is fun, not stressful at all. Plus, the practices won’t kill you.
JG: You have two sisters that also play at BYU-I. Are you on the same team?
TH: No. We’re on opposing teams.
JG: How has that been for you guys?
TH: It’s good playing against each other. I can cheer for them from the opposite side. It’s all fun. (Laughs) They can slam a ball in my face, and I’ll cheer them on!
JG: Is volleyball the only sport for you, or do you enjoy others?
TH: I enjoy some other sports, like basketball and softball. But volleyball is number one for me.
