Cyclocross — one heck of a race

After finishing a bike race of icy weather, slippery terrain and backbreaking hurdles, Jared Hess, a sophomore studying construction management, likened it to perdition.

The Rex kicked off its first Cyclocross event on Saturday, Oct. 27 at Nature Park and held the final race Saturday, Nov. 10. Twenty-one local residents participated in the race, ranging in age from 17 to about 70.

The competitors raced around the mile track as many times as they could in the 50-minute race, facing multiple obstacles in which they were forced to get off their bikes and carry them over wooden hurdles.

“The hardest part was getting over the hurdles,” said Craig Johnson, a statistics professor at BYU-Idaho.

The competition was intense for second and third place; first place, however, was in a league of its own.

Trevor Garner, of Victor, Idaho, has been racing in Cyclocross events for the past 15 years. He sped through the course, almost lapping all of the other competitors. But he also gave his opponents, who were mostly in their first Cyclocross competition, advice on how to improve.

“He [Garner] taught me how to jump over the hurdles without losing momentum,” Johnson said.

The coordinators felt the event was well-attended, with friends and family of the competitors cheering them on.

“I’m just pleased with how many come out to support the community,” said John Hart, a senior studying business and one of the coordinators.

Garner won first, Hess was second, and Chris Huskinson, of Rexburg, third. □
