BYU extends its winning streak to six

BYU beat TCU Nov. 11 in a home game, 27-22. With a win over the Horned Frogs (5-5, 2-4), the Cougars (7-2, 5-0) extended its winning streak to six games. Dating back to last season, BYU has won 13 straight games against Mountain West Conference opponents.

BYU took charge early, marching 50 yards in three minutes in a drive that ended with a 15-yard touchdown run by freshman running back Harvey Unga. Unga, who already holds the freshman rushing record for BYU with 799 yards, has scored a touchdown in each of BYU’s last four games. He finished the game with two touchdowns on 64 yards rushing and 13 yards receiving.

The Cougars held TCU to a field goal on the Horned Frog’s first drive of the game. BYU then responded with a 10-play, 89-yard drive that ended with a one-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Max Hall to fullback Joe Semanoff. After the teams exchanged field goals for the rest of the second quarter, BYU took a 17-to-9 lead into halftime.

BYU seemed to have put the game out of reach after Unga’s second rushing touchdown of the night, putting BYU up 24-9. Unga’s touchdown was set up by a 22-yard interception return by linebacker Kelly Poppinga.

TCU scored a touchdown of its own on a one-yard touchdown run by TCU quarterback Marcus Brock, pulling the Horned Frogs within 12 with 10 minutes left in the third quarter.

BYU was able to finish off TCU in the fourth quarter, holding the Horned Frogs to one touchdown.

BYU’s defense played well, holding TCU to nine points through three quarters. BYU also stopped TCU on all four of their attempted fourth-down conversions on the night.

Hall passed for 305 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Tight end Dennis Pitta pulled in seven catches for 88 yards, and wide receiver Austin Collie had four receptions for 109 yards. □
