Wildcats flag football team took no prisoners this past season

Invincible. Unconquered. Undefeated. The undisputed champions of the Viking Women’s Flag Football league.

The Wildcats.

They won every one of their games, 7-0, the perfect season.

But the season was even more perfect. No other team scored on them — ever.

The key to their success did not lie in one person. Flag football is a team sport.

“Miles [our coach] taught us really well. We learned how to play different positions and defense,” said Suzi Pehrson, a junior studying health education, “He gave us all certain jobs, and it worked.”

Miles Johnson, a senior studying construction management and coach of the Wildcats, attributed some of their success to the women’s willingness to listen to a coach’s perspective.

“They were able to carry out a game plan and follow plays. That made them successful. That and they’re very talented athletes,” Johnson said.

A couple of the key players mentioned by Johnson were Bethany Beus, the Wildcats’ quarterback, and Pehrson.

“Beus has an accurate arm and is better than most guys at throwing the football. Pehrson has a lot of speed and was really effective on the offense,” Johnson said.

Since some teams play to win, one might question if the Wildcats actually enjoy the sport — or just winning.

“The girls did like to win, but they enjoyed playing the sport,” Johnson said.

Pehrson felt like they more than enjoyed the sport.

“We love playing. The games were the highlight of our week.” □
