BYU entered its game against CSU with expectations of a win, but the performance of freshman running back Harvey Unga was a welcome surprise.
The Cougars beat the Colorado State Rams 35-16 Saturday to extend their winning streak to five games, dating back to September 22, when they defeated Air Force. BYU also has a 12-game winning streak against Mountain West Conference opponents that began last season.
Max Hall passed for 355 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions in what was arguably the best performance of his career. But overshadowing Hall’s impressive display was the work of Unga, who recorded 110 receiving and 51 rushing yards on the day. Unga also had one rushing touchdown, earned early in the third quarter.
Coach Bronco Mendenhall continues to praise his young running back.
“My intent is to try to keep Harvey Unga grounded and try to keep him growing and learning with his work ethic developing,” Mendenhall said. He has so much ahead of him, and we all know he is very capable, and to this point, he handles it really well.”
The defense had a good outing, holding CSU to three points through three quarters. Defensive end Jan Jorgensen recorded four tackles on the day, two of which were sacks.
Austin Collie caught eight passes for 111 yards and a touchdown, while tight end Dennis Pitta recorded 70 yards receiving on four catches. Fullback Joe Semanoff had his first touchdown of the year on a five-yard pass from Hall in the fourth quarter.
