The season came down to one game. Tempting Turquoise pitted against Trash Queens. Who would take home the coveted championship shirts?
On Oct. 24, Trash Queens became the Women’s Flag Football champions for the RecSports Viking League. It was a blowout game, 19-0, but that didn’t stop the Tempting Turquoise fans from having a little fun.
Jed Stephensen, a senior studying English, and Kavi Branham, a sophomore studying marriage and family development, came to support their team in the noisiest way they could find — by banging some pots and pans.
“We’re actually here to get attention, not give attention,” said Stephensen. “Once you’re done interviewing us, we’re out of here.”
But Stephensen and Branham stayed through to the end, their enthusiasm appreciated by Tempting Turquoise captain CoyLou Steele, a senior studying communications.
“We definitely want to thank our dedicated fans,” said Steele. “And we give full props to the other team.”
The Trash Queens overcame a rough start in the flag football season to make it to the championships. Karie Anderson, a sophomore studying horticulture, said the team members didn’t know each other well at the beginning and lost the first few games. That changed once they started hanging out as friends.
“I thought we came together really well,” said Anderson. “We had fun, and that was the most important part.”
Anderson encouraged students looking for new friendships to join a RecSports team. “It gives you the opportunity to meet new people and broaden your horizons,” Anderson said.
After participating in flag football, Steele had only one regret:
“This was my first time participating in RecSports, and there’s a little part of me that wishes I’d started sooner.”
Stephenson and Branham added their support of the RecSports program.
“We don’t support fight clubs or foam parties, but we do support women’s flag football,” Stephenson said.
