The perfect season

Wild Soccer scored two first-half goals and added another in the second to beat Internacional 3-0 on Oct. 23. Wild Soccer was a perfect 8-0 on the season coming into the championship and wasted no time establishing its presence on the field. Forward Adam Christensen, a junior studying communication, scored an unassisted goal minutes into the match and Joseph Januzzi, a sophomore studying exercise science, followed with a goal off a penalty kick soon after.

Most of the players on Wild Soccer grew up in the Rexburg area and have known each other for years, Christensen said. “It’s great to win, but it’s better to win with your friends.”

The teams both made frequent substitutions and employed fast-moving offenses, attempting several long passes throughout the game. Short passes seemed to be troublesome for both teams as an active defense from both squads kept disrupting the timing required for this kind of play.

Wild Soccer’s third goal came from Brock Stoddard, a senior studying economics, as he lofted the ball over the Internacional keeper’s head from the right side of the pitch about 10 minutes into the second half.

After the final whistle sounded, Wild Soccer team members gathered at midfield and were given T-shirts to commemorate their winning the Viking-league championship.

Internacional striker Johan Baer, a sophomore studying computer information technology, said, “It was a lot of fun. They have a good structure that allows anyone who wants to play soccer to play.” Other players echoed this sentiment.

“[BYU-I’s soccer program] is great for allowing everyone to play, regardless of skill level; it is inspired for that,” Christensen said. □
