Gladiator dreams come true

Kevin Brown, a senior studying university studies, has always had a dream. But this dream seemed completely unattainable — until now. What might this dream be? Brown has always wanted to participate in the American Gladiators.

“I watched American Gladiators as a kid, and I was forced to be a spectator,” Brown said.

After talking to a Rec Sports advisor, he found that his dream could come true – in a way.

That dream was given form Sat., Oct. 27, when the Gladiator Games were hosted in the Hart Fieldhouse. Two people of the same gender were invited to come ready to challenge one another in grueling competitions.

The challenges included a tug of war; a game called Powerball, where one person tries to put a rubber ball in a basket while their opponent tries to pull their flag football belt off; and a game where each contender tries to keep three rubber balls in his or her own basket while taking balls out of others’ baskets.

The final event had contenders go through an obstacle course where they threw a Frisbee and shot a toy gun at a target on the wall, while opponents shot tennis balls at them through a baseball pitching machine.

Contenders seemed to have fun as they spun circles and tackled one another throughout the competition. For some of them, it was like fulfilling their own dream of becoming contenders in a real American Gladiator competition.

“It’s always been my dream, and BYU-Idaho [Rec Sports] allowed me to fulfill it,” said Benjamin “Iceman” Head, a sophomore studying biology.

Anyone else on campus with a dream of being in Gladiator Wars, the final competition is this Sat., Nov. 3.  □
